day hike/bike: sentry trail and abandoned causeway antelope island - October 13, 2012

If you have ever been curious about the abandoned causeway on the southeastern part of Antelope Island that stretches towards I-80 between 5600 West and Saltair, we will try to explore it on this hike from the Antelope Island side. We'll drive to the Garr Ranch to pick up the necessary backcountry permits and then hike the Sentry Trail to Sentry Peak. This is about a 6.5 mile loop hike with about 1000 feet elevation gain. From there, we'll get on our mountain bicycles and bike (mostly level) south along the South Island Trail for about 3 miles to find the abandoned causeway. We'll explore the causeway as time allows to view the dried lake bed. This activity is geared towards hikers, with the bicycles just being a means of transportation to the abandoned causeway and the Garr Ranch. For those just wishing to do the Sentry Peak hike, we can make arrangements for multiple vehicles if necessary. If exploring the causeway also, you will need a mountain bicycle.
