canyoneering davis gulch exploratory - September 14, 2012

Davis Gluch is one of the most storied of the Escalante canyons; it is where Everett Ruess disappeared, in 1934, and much has been made, and written about his fate. Because of its distance, both from Salt Lake City, and down the rough Hole in the Rock Rd, despite is beautiful nature and colorful history, it is one of the lesser visited canyons. I have never been there, which is why I list this trip as an exploration. It is not, however a terribly long or difficult trip, which is not to say it's a walk in the park. Although some of the guides suggest it can be down climbed, the consensus is that it is a 3B technical canyon, and that full technical gear is advised. A light wetsuit, or even just a shortie, is advised, as there may be some swimming. Shane estimates that it is an 8 hour canyon, car to car, so it is not a terribly long day, mostly downhill, with just a short scramble out of the canyon back to the plateau above. We will leave town Friday afternoon,(the 14th) and camp at the davis guch trailhead, just off the HITRR. We will do the hike Saturday, drive the remaining seven miles out to the Hole in the Rock, and then return home Sunday night.
