road bike - lower butterfield canyon - May 3, 2015

This ride is on the west side of the valley and has several options to vary the length. It's a very pretty ride with a different view of the valley. If you are going on the extended route all the way to the top you will want a bike with low gears or strong legs and lungs. We will leave the parking lot of Copper Hills High School at 9:30. Come early and be ready to ride at that time. We will meet in the NE corner of the parking lot. It's about one mile to the bike trail along the Mountain View corridor. We will travel on the path going south to Daybreak Parkway (mile 5). We will then turn right heading west. At about the 7.8 mile mark the road tees, we will turn left (south) onto Bacchus Highway. At about mile 10 as the road curves to the east, we will turn right (west) and heads up Butterfield Canyon. The canyon is closed to public vehicle traffic until June 1. The canyon has three sections. The lower 3+ mile section grade is 3 to 6%. If you turn around at the end of the lower section the ride will be about 26 miles total and 1700' elevation gain. This is the turnaround spot for the posted ride. People not wanting to do the steeper upper sections of the canyon can take a lunch break in the shade of the trees along the stream or just head back to the school. I will continue to the top. For the fearless and strong riders you can continue with me. The middle section is the steepest ranging from 7 to 15%. Then the upper section is 7 to 10%. The canyon is 6.8 miles long and gains 2400 feet in elevation. We will have ridden 17 miles when we reach the top. The view from the top is amazing. After we reach the top we will turn around and enjoy the downhill and work our way back to the school. Bring plenty of water and snack as you will get a workout. Kevin Earl Cell 801-568-3791
