hike/ snow hike (probably not snowshoe) - layton peak - May 16, 2020

We plan to make Layton Peak (9,571 ft) via the Great Western Trail and go down via the Kay's Creek Ridge trail, weather and conditions permitting. The final ascent to Layton Peak is very bushy. So it may be easier to bag this peak on snow. The Great Western Trail is not steep, except one short (approximately 100 yards) section. The Kay's Creek Ridge trail is very steep. If it's too slippery, we will do out and back via the Great Western Trail. We may also make Chinscraper (9,190 ft) - a very small bump near Layton Peak. Bring microspikes and 10 Es. Rated MSD- for potential snow conditions. Please email before Friday, 6 pm, May 15, for the meeting place and time. Registration priority will be given to WMC members. Co-organized with Ed Hemphill. Update (5/7): Micro-spikes should be sufficient. No snowshoes. No ice axe. Mostly clear of snow except the top section near Chinscraper Bowl and the peak.
